Consult with Curian

In this session of Consult with Curian we explain the reasons behind the safety questions which are asked of patients prior to having an MRI scan.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is a technique that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of inside the body.  The MRI scan is a painless, non-invasive procedure that looks at internal organs, blood vessels, joints, muscles, inflamed areas and tumours without the need for x-rays.

Due to this magnetic field patients are required to answer MRI safety screening questions prior to undergoing their MRI scan.  The reasons for the undertaking of this safety screening are as follows:-

There are a number of implants that comprise a set of possible contraindications to MRI scanning.  Metal implants for example might heat or move during the procedure. The functioning of these implants may also be interrupted or permanently altered.  The make and model of certain implants will need to be checked against relevant databases to determine whether the patient can be scanned.

Patients are asked if they have any metallic foreign bodies.  The reason being that these might move or heat during scanning, resulting in a serious injury.  If it is identified that there is the possibility of a metallic foreign body in the eye, Curian Medical can co-ordinate and orbital x-ray prior to scanning to exclude this.  Your account handler will discuss this with you should an orbital x-ray be required.

Other questions that will be asked prior to the MRI scan include whether or not the patient has had surgery within the last 6 weeks and for female patients whether they are pregnant.

If the patient has a contra-indication to MRI scanning there are a number of alternative imaging techniques that may prove useful.  In this case a clinical discussion with the Radiologist would be warranted.

As part of our service, Curian Medical endeavour to make our customers aware at the earliest opportunity of any contra-indications to MRI scanning.  We will then liaise with the Radiologist, Customer and Patient regarding any alternative imaging techniques that may be available.

Should you have any queries in relation to contra-indications to MRI scanning, please do feel free to contact our Curative Team on 0121 236 8377.

Consult with Curian

Our Curative Team are frequently asked how far patients are required to travel for appointments.  In this Consult with Curian, I am pleased to be able to share with you further information with regard to our extensive networks and hospital partners.

Curian Medical works closely with our hospital partners to deliver a nationwide diagnostic imaging service.  We have access to just under 300 venues where we can co-ordinate imaging such as MRI scans, CT scans, x-rays, ultrasounds and arthrograms.  We meet regularly with our partners to ensure the highest standards are provided in order that our patients receive the best possible treatment.  Upon receipt of an instruction our Curative Team identify the closest venues available from our network and then in conjunction with the patient select the most convenient venue for the patient to travel to.  Curian  have been required from time to time to secure appointments at hospital venues outside our primary network and your account handler will be happy to discuss this further with you if required.

In addition to the managed networks for diagnostic imaging, Curian Medical has been busy developing our own network of experts within the fields of physiotherapy, counselling and psychotherapy.  Curian has available just under 800 venues nationwide where we able to co-ordinate physiotherapy and counselling such as CBT and EMDR.  Upon receipt of your instruction, our Curative Team match an appropriately qualified expert within close proximity to your patient.  We appreciate that co-ordinating a treatment with multiple appointments requires a convenient location with very little mileage for your patient to travel.

Curian Medical works with in excess of 1000 venues and experts to bring you our nationwide rehabilitation services.  All of which have had to meet our strict requirements to be included on our supplier panel.  Regular audits and checks are carried out to ensure our high standards are maintained.

Should you wish to receive any further information in relation to our service or networks please do feel free to call Amanda O’Neill on 0121 236 8377 or via aoneill@curianmedical.co.uk

Consult with Curian

I am pleased to be able to launch “Consult with Curian” via our news page.

We will post regularly questions asked of our team here at Curian Medical by patients and customers alike and provide you with our response.  Should you wish to see any specific topics covered then please do feel free to approach our Curative Team or your account handler with further details.

In the first session of Consult with Curian we answer your question – “I am claustrophobic, can I have an MRI scan?”

It is not uncommon to feel a little anxious prior to an MRI scan but there are numerous options now available for patients who may feel claustrophobic.

Firstly, how far into a conventional scanner you go depends on what part of your body is being scanned. If you are having your foot, ankle, knee, leg, or lumbar spine scanned then you will likely be going feet first. In most cases your head will not even be under the magnet. All other scans, such as head, cervical spine, thoracic spine, or shoulders you will be required to go head first. Our team will be happy to discuss with you any concerns that you may have.  Staff at the imaging facilities that we utilise will be most happy to discuss the procedure with you and will put you at ease throughout the imaging process.

If claustrophobia is something you suffer from or think might prevent you from completing an important MRI procedure, let your doctor know.  Your GP may prescribe drugs to control the panic and physical symptoms of claustrophobia, specifically related to getting an MRI procedure. It is important that these are prescribed by your GP. It should be strongly noted that if a patient takes any sort of drug for the test that they inform the radiologist doing the procedure and they find someone to help them home until the effects of the drug wears off.

Finally, Curian Medical has access to a number of imaging facilities that offer Open MRI Scanning.  Our Curative Team will be most happy to discuss the closest facility available to you.  The term open describes the actual structure of the MRI’s gantry. The open gantry is generally open on all four sides where the closed gantry is a cylinder shape with no view out. Therefore Open MRI’s are great for claustrophobic and larger patients. This can result in a more comfortable experience for the patient.

Should you have any further queries regarding our Open MRI scanning facilities then please do call us on 0121 236 8377 or contact us via enquiries@curianmedical.co.uk
